Course

Overview

This course focuses on equipping trainers with evidence-based strategies to support the active ageing population. The course covers essential training models, common weaknesses, and a holistic approach that integrates the physiological, neurological, and functional needs of ageing adults. By focusing on three essential elements—squatting, lunging (stepping up & back), and depth perception—the course offers practical techniques for creating effective, sustainable programs.

Modules

TRAINING MODELS

1 & 2

Review of Current Training Models for Active Ageing

This module introduces the primary models currently used in training ageing adults, such as falls prevention and cardiovascular programs. It also examines how these models support or fall short in promoting functional life skills.

Topics Covered:

    • Overview of current programs (e.g., Silver Sneakers, Arthritis Foundation, Diabetes programs).

    • Benefits and limitations of fitness-focused vs. life-focused training models.

Reasons Current Programs Aren’t Fully Effective

This module dives into why existing programs may fail to address the full spectrum of ageing adults’ needs, often focusing on isolated components like strength or balance without integrating them into a holistic approach.

Topics Covered:

    • Gaps in addressing psychological, neurological, and hormonal changes.

    • Limitations of isolating fitness elements without functional life application.

Modules

KEY COMPONENTS

3 & 4

Integration of Key Components for Ageing Programs

Understanding and integrating various physical and cognitive components is key. This module discusses how to combine strength, mobility, balance, and brain engagement in training programs.

Topics Covered:

    • Functional continuum: moving from isolated exercises to integrative movements.

    • The role of multi-directional movements and neurological feedback.

Setting Goals for the Ageing Demographic

This module provides strategies for setting meaningful goals tailored to ageing clients, emphasizing functionality and independence over aesthetics.

Topics Covered:

    • Goals focusing on maintaining independence and enjoying daily activities.

    • The difference between physiological vs. physical goals for ageing clients.

Modules

WEAKNESSES AND HEALTH ISSUES

5 & 6

Common Weaknesses and Health Issues in Ageing

Participants will learn about common health challenges such as sarcopenia, osteoporosis, and balance issues, and how these can impact exercise programming.

Topics Covered:

  • Health issues like arthritis, diabetes, and cognitive decline.

  • Addressing physical weaknesses: muscular endurance, joint health, and stability.

The 3 Essential Elements in Training

This module outlines the three fundamental movements—squatting, lunging (stepping up & back), and depth perception—and explains how they are essential for functional independence.

Topics Covered:

    • Practical applications of each element.

    • Techniques for incorporating these movements into exercises that promote balance and spatial awareness.

Modules

EFFECTIVE TRAINING

7

Strategies for Implementing Effective Training

This module offers practical strategies to design sessions that integrate the three essential elements, adapt to clients’ individual needs, and encourage “incidental exercise” (everyday movement).

Topics Covered:

    • Movement preparation techniques (e.g., whole-body integration).

    • Implementing coaching cues for safe, effective exercise.

    • Encouraging incidental exercise for increased activity throughout daily life.

Completion

Upon completing of all modules, and a short quiz, participants will receive a digital certificate certifying their expertise in training the active ageing population with the three essential elements framework.
